Physical shares and the 2027 window

Is 4 February 2027 a deadline for every physical shareholder?

No. It is the closing date of SEBI’s special window for certain physical securities sold or purchased before 1 April 2019. Ordinary certificates already registered in the holder’s name can still follow the normal demat process. Physical certificates do not become worthless on that date.

Who may qualify for the SEBI special window?

The window covers physical securities sold or purchased before 1 April 2019, including eligible requests that were never lodged or were previously rejected, returned or unattended. The RTA makes the final determination after checking the original documents.

What if the registered shareholder has died?

That is usually a transmission case, not an ordinary transfer. The RTA first establishes the nominee, surviving joint holder or legal heirs using the applicable succession documents, and the securities are then credited in demat form.

What if the original certificate is lost?

The company or RTA generally needs to complete its duplicate or entitlement-document process before dematerialisation. Requirements differ by company and case, so obtain the RTA-specific checklist first.
