How to recover shares and dividends transferred to IEPF
A practical starting guide to IEPF share recovery: verify the transfer, prepare IEPF-5, coordinate company verification and receive demat credit.

A practical step-by-step route
- 1
Verify the IEPF record
Search the official records and reconcile the holder name, company, folio and transferred shares or amounts. Similar names are not enough to establish a claim.
- 2
Resolve claimant identity
If the registered holder has died or details have changed, determine with the company whether transmission or corrections must accompany or precede the claim.
- 3
Prepare the IEPF-5 filing
Use the current web form and portal instructions. Enter company, claimant, bank and demat details carefully because inconsistencies can delay verification.
- 4
Complete company verification
Send or upload the documents requested under the current process and coordinate with the company’s nodal officer while it verifies and submits its report or EVR.
- 5
Track the Authority decision
Monitor the claim and respond to deficiencies. Approved cash and shares are released through the bank and demat details accepted for the claim.
Start locating these
- Company, folio and transferred share/dividend details
- IEPF-5 acknowledgement and current portal-generated documents
- PAN, address and bank proof of the claimant
- Demat Client Master List or account proof requested by the portal/company
- Transmission or succession papers where the registered holder has died
Avoid these expensive mistakes
- Do not file against a company or folio until the transferred record is reconciled.
- Do not rely on outdated third-party form packs when the portal process changes.
- Do not assume submitting IEPF-5 alone completes company verification.
