How to convert physical shares to demat in India
A practical physical-to-demat process for certificates already registered in your name: DP, DRF, RTA verification, documents and common rejections.
This route may fit if…
A practical step-by-step route
- 1
Match the demat account
Check that the holder name, joint-holder names and their order match the physical holding. Ask the DP or RTA how to resolve a difference before surrendering originals.
- 2
Get the correct DRF
Request the Dematerialisation Request Form from your DP. Separate companies or ISINs may require separate requests, so follow the DP’s current instructions.
- 3
Submit through the DP
Give the completed DRF and original certificates to the DP and keep the acknowledgement or demat request number.
- 4
Let the issuer or RTA verify
The request moves to the issuer or its Registrar and Transfer Agent. They verify the holding and may raise a deficiency if names, signatures, certificate records or KYC do not align.
- 5
Confirm electronic credit
After approval, verify the credit in the demat account and retain the acknowledgement and correspondence for your records.
Start locating these
- Original share certificates
- DRF supplied by the Depository Participant
- Demat account details or Client Master List
- PAN and current KYC requested by the DP/RTA
- Any earlier RTA rejection or deficiency letter
Avoid these expensive mistakes
- Do not send originals to an address found in an old letter without confirming the current RTA.
- Do not use the standard route if the registered holder has died or the certificate is in someone else’s name.
- Do not assume every old certificate is subject to the February 2027 special window.
