How to transmit inherited physical shares after a shareholder’s death
Understand the transmission route for inherited physical shares: nominee, joint holder, legal heirs, RTA documents and eventual demat credit.
This route may fit if…
A practical step-by-step route
- 1
Confirm the registered holding
Identify the issuer, folio, holder order, certificate records and current RTA. Check whether the holding is joint and whether a nomination is recorded.
- 2
Identify the claimant route
Ask the RTA whether the case proceeds through a surviving joint holder, nominee or legal-heir/succession route. The document set depends on this answer.
- 3
Build the current RTA checklist
Obtain the current forms and requirements directly from the RTA. Succession evidence, affidavits, indemnities or court documents depend on the case and prevailing norms.
- 4
Resolve connected issues
If certificates are lost, KYC is incomplete or shares have moved to IEPF, sequence those procedures as directed rather than filing conflicting requests.
- 5
Complete transmission and demat credit
After the RTA accepts entitlement, follow its and the DP’s instructions for credit to the approved claimant’s demat account.
Start locating these
- Death certificate of the registered holder
- Original certificates or available holding records
- PAN, address and bank/demat evidence of claimant(s)
- Nomination or joint-holder records, if applicable
- Succession documents requested for the particular claimant route
Avoid these expensive mistakes
- Do not sign or submit forms as though the deceased holder were alive.
- Do not assume nomination alone resolves every beneficial-ownership question.
- Do not courier original succession documents before confirming what the RTA accepts.
